در زبان انگلیسی اسم (Noun) بیانگر مردم، مکان، اشیاء، فعالیت ها، ایده ها و احساسات می باشد. کلمات زیر همگی اسم (Noun) محسوب می شوند:

Actor, Nicaragua, book, love

در جملات زیر اسم ها مشخص شده اند:

1- That man is an actor.

2- That country is beautiful.

3- I use pliers to fix things.

4- Everyone needs love.

5- I have an idea! Let's go see a movie!

ضمیرها (Pronouns) جانشین اسم می شوند مانند من، تو، او، ما، شما، آن، آنها 

ضمایر مفرد:

I, You, He, She, It

ضمایر جمع:

We, You, They

مثال:

I am a teacher. (Noun: teacher, Pronoun: I )

You are a student. ( Noun: student, Pronoun: You )

He is a guitar player. ( Noun: player, Pronoun: He )

She is a mother. ( Noun: mother, Pronoun: she )

It is a radio. ( Noun: radio, Pronoun: It )

We are people. ( Noun: people, Pronoun: We)

(I + You) = We

You are students. ( Noun: Students, Pronoun: You )

They are a family. ( Noun: family, Pronoun: They )

نکته: They همیشه "جمع" بوده و برای افراد و اشیا استفاده می شود.

They are wooden chairs. ( Noun: chairs, Pronoun: They )

در مثال فوق They ضمیری است که جانشین Chairs  به معنی صندلی ها شده است.
